Portraits of Political Leaders. Reflections on Urban Space, Aesthetics and Political Power in J. Kabila’s Kinshasa.
Since 2007, ‘visibility’ (la visibilité) has become the watchword of Joseph Kabila’s propaganda machine. Since then, Kinois have observed a gradual increase of Kabila’s propaganda portraits in the city space. Most billboards are centred on reconstruction works (les 5 chantiers), and usually show a smiling face of Joseph Kabila in the right corner. Other panels display Kabila more centred, addressing the spectators and stating: “ ‘We’ made a bet with the world/the others concerning the reconstruction of DR Congo. We are going to win it.”
The presentation, based on ethnographic material collected in 2009 and 2010, will zoom in on the above mentioned public photographs of Kabila and also, but to a lesser extent because less available, of other political leaders. In the first part, I will concentrate on the strategies and tactics of publicizing photographs of political leaders in Kinshasa in order to understand how space and image are dialectically interwoven and embedded in the confirmation and contestation of Kabila’s leadership. The second part concentrates on the visual language of the Visibility billboards. In particular, the visualization of Kabila and the accompanying images and discourses will be scrutinized in order to identify the signs and narratives that are deployed in the symbolic production of postcolonial leadership in this new phase of DR Congo’s political history.

J’espère vous voir nombreux à cette occasion. Vos invités sont également les bienvenus!

Birgit
